NEW TO FORRÓ?

Want to learn a fun, social, and authentic Brazilian partner dance?

Forró is a joyful and welcoming dance from Brazil, danced socially all over the world. It is improvisational and connection-focused, with partners responding to each other and to the music in the moment. The dance emphasises communication, rhythm and shared movement — and it often feels even better than it looks.

Love to Forró Melbourne is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to sharing forró as a living cultural practice. Our classes focus on technique, musicality, posture and connection, supporting dancers to feel confident, comfortable and expressive on the social dance floor.

We offer three class groups designed to support different stages of the learning journey, from first-timers to experienced dancers looking to challenge themselves further.

No partner required. All classes are rotational, and everyone is welcome to learn as a lead or a follower.

Aru and Geovanne

Our classes are lead by Aru and Geovanne. 🤩

Familiar faces in our community and already part of the teaching team, Aru and Geovanne are Brazilian-born forró instructors based in Melbourne and key contributors to the local forró scene. Both have been active across festivals in Australia and have trained in Brazil.

Aru is a lifelong dance and music enthusiast who sees dance as a powerful way to connect people and build community. Her approach balances technique and playfulness, with a strong focus on musicality and that magic connection between body, music, and partner.

Geovanne has been dancing forró for over 10 years and continues to evolve through training and community. Currently diving into roots styles, he loves blending universitário with roots, bringing a grounded, dynamic, and playful energy to the dance floor. We’re excited for a year of shared movement, learning, and many dances together 💛

Group 1 is an open-level class with no prior experience required. This class focuses on the core elements that make forró feel good to dance: connection, rhythm and clear movement. We work on posture, weight transfer, timing and musicality, and how to communicate comfortably with a partner in both open and close frame (the embrace). You’ll learn fundamental movements and patterns, as well as how to give and receive cues in a relaxed, responsive way. Never danced forró before? Start your journey here. Group 1 is an open-level class with no prior experience required. It is also ideal for dancers with experience who want to refine technique, improve musical awareness, or reconnect with a softer, more grounded way of dancing.

This class is for dancers who are already familiar with the foundations of forró and feel comfortable dancing full songs at different tempos with a variety of partners. In Group 2, we build repertoire and integrate foundational movements into smoother, more dynamic dancing. We explore variations, sequencing, directional changes and playful musical interpretation, while continuing to refine technique, body control and connection. Groups 1 and 2 are sequential but not exclusive. Dancers joining Group 2 are strongly encouraged to continue attending Group 1 alongside it, as this supports musicality, reinforces technique and helps build confidence and consistency over time.

This class is for dancers who already have a solid technical base and enjoy working at a faster pace with more complex material. In Group 3, we work with intricate patterns, quicker transitions and precise timing. The focus is on responsiveness, clarity and body control while navigating more demanding material and musical changes. Because this class moves quickly and does not revisit foundational concepts in detail, level assessment by instructors is required. This helps ensure shared timing, comfort and safety, and allows the group to progress together. Dancers in Group 3 are encouraged to continue attending Groups 1 and 2, supporting strong foundations, partner awareness and long-term development.
